Mari Morgan, choral conductor and singer

Mari Morgan is dedicated to bringing music making to the community at large.

A choral conductor and singer, Mari founded the North American Welsh Choir, Côr Cymry Gogledd America in 1997, becoming its Artistic Director and Conductor.  Called the "Community Choir that spans a Continent," Côr Cymry's far-flung choristers use the internet to learn their music and keep abreast choir activities.

Dedicated to the presentation of new music, Mari is deeply committed to a North American Welsh choral music experience and genre.  Under her leadership, the choir has commissioned and championed works by Welsh-North American composers such as Hilary Tann, Karen Thomas, Owen Burdick, Victor Davies and David Thomas and writer Menna Elfyn.

Building on techniques developed for Côr Cymry, Mari took on the role of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the British Council’s Sporting Nations Community Choirs in Argentina.  Formed to celebrate Argentina’s 2010 bicentenary, the choir is open to people across the country using on-line learning resources and regional rehearsal centers in Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Chubut in Patagonia.  The choir’s repertoire is drawn from each member country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (U.K.) and celebrates the special sporting relationship between the U.K. and Argentina.

As a mezzo-soprano, Mari’s professional resume spans three continents and includes concerts, festivals, masterclasses, and workshops, as well as recitals and opera roles.  She has released several CD recordings, and been a featured guest on several others.  In the fall of 2008 Mari had the pleasure of singing the Welsh National Anthem in Madison Square Garden, New York, at the opening of the Joe Calzaghe v. Roy Jones, Jr. boxing championship, covered live on HBO television.

Mari Morgan has received many awards.  She received the National Welsh-American Foundation’s prestigious Welsh Heritage Medallion at the North American Festival of Wales in 2009.  She was also honored by the National Eisteddfod in Wales being the Leader of Welsh People from Overseas at the 2000 Eisteddfod in her hometown of Llanelli.

Mari grew up in Llanelli, South Wales.  At age 15 she received a scholarship to study at the Welsh College of Music and Drama.  She furthered her music studies with degrees from the University of Wales in Cardiff and Trinity College of Music in London.  She is a member of the International Federation of Choral Music and Chorus America.

Mari moved to the United States in 1996,having been awarded her green card and permanent residency for her musical expertise and accomplishments.  Now a U.S. citizen, she divides her time between the United States, Argentina and the United Kingdom.
